Alliance of LA County Parents in the Press

  • Barbara Ferrer and Adam Schiff vs. freedom of speech in Los Angeles County

Click here to read this opinion piece from Will Swaim in the Orange County Register: “Whatever the outcome when Hamill’s case goes to trial in L.A. Superior Court in October, we can celebrate today. A talented attorney stepped up to defend a constitutional right. Doctors dared to contradict media hype and political theater. A newspaper editor resisted the authoritarian impulse that runs through our political culture. Thousands of parents acted swiftly to protect their children from teachers union leaders determined to treat those children as means to political ends. Brothers and sisters, I say again, we have already won.”

  • Parent Lawsuit Gaining Steam Against LA Public Health Dept. Over Indoor Mask Mandate

A new lawsuit filed in Los Angeles on behalf of a group of parents seeks to immediately halt any plans to bring back an indoor mask mandate on school children, claiming that the Los Angeles Department of Public Health “is using erroneous hospitalization metrics,” the Globe reported in July.

“On behalf of @LACountyParents, I filed a petition for writ of mandate and complaint against @lapublichealth, Ferrer and Davis. We cannot live like this anymore. If she proceeds with the new mask mandate on Friday, we will immediately seek a TRO,” attorney Julie Hamill announced on Twitter.

  • LA Public Health Agency Drops Threat of New Mask Mandate… For Now

Mid-afternoon Thursday, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health announced it is “pausing” the latest mask mandate – not cancelling, but “pausing.”

  • The COVID crisis is over, and it’s been over

A few weeks earlier, Ferrer had geared up to reimpose an indoor mask mandate based on the CDC’s metrics. That enraged local parents of school-age kids and resulted in a lawsuit against Ferrer and the Public Health Department. Although Ferrer backed down from the mask mandate, the lawsuit continues.

Attorney Julie Hamill is representing the Alliance of Los Angeles County Parents, which seeks “to remove all unnecessary, harmful, and unjustified restrictions against children and provide children with a full return to normalcy.” The lawsuit alleges that L.A. Public Health has demonstrated decision-making that is “arbitrary, capricious and entirely lacking in evidentiary support,” and that the rights of children to the equal protection of the law are being violated.

  • Lawyering up at L.A. County Health over dubious mask mandates

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health has lawyered up and is trying to get a lawsuit by a group of parents dismissed before it has a chance to get to the discovery phase, the legal process that enables attorneys to demand documents and sworn depositions.

The lawsuit was filed July 26 by attorney Julie Hamill on behalf of the Alliance for Los Angeles County Parents. It seeks to prevent the county Public Health Department from reimposing a mask mandate that would force children to wear masks in school, stating that the masks are not a harmless precautionary measure but are damaging to children.

“Petitioner members suffered tremendously under previous health orders issued by DPH, which forced children aged two and older to wear masks in school, childcare, and youth sports, among other things for over two years,” the lawsuit states. “Petitioner members suffered speech delays, developmental delays, social isolation, depression, anxiety, learning loss, facial rashes, heat-related illnesses, migraines, and those who could not tolerate masks were forced out of their schools and social communities.”

  • Los Angeles Parents Group Lawsuit Has 'Dr.' Ferrer Dodging and Weaving

After Barbara Ferrer, the Ph.D. in social work who heads the Los Angeles Department of Public Health, threatened to impose an indoor masking mandate on the county’s ten million residents, the Alliance of Los Angeles County Parents filed a lawsuit against the department, Ferrer and Health Officer Dr. Muntu Davis for violating the equal protection clause. The lawsuit states:

“The incongruity between the County’s decision to impose such a dramatic restriction on its residents and the remarks of the LAC+USC physicians explaining the waning risks of COVID and absence of high hospitalization due to COVID demonstrates decision-making by County Public Health that is beyond the bounds of reason, arbitrary, capricious, and entirely lacking in evidentiary support.”

The group is headed by attorney Julie Hamill, a mother of three who is also a school board candidate. READ MORE
